INTRODUCING ARMA INTERNATIONAL’S GARP®
(GENERALLY ACCEPTED RECORD KEEPING PRINCIPLES)
AND HOW THEY APPLY TO LAW FIRMS
July 20, 2010 11:30 - 12:00 Registration
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Program
ARMA International has been working to develop standards of record keeping and recently
introduced GARP®, eight (8) principles of record keeping. Although GARP® is intended as a
framework and not a prescriptive, it was designed as a tool for organizations to use for
information management and governance of records creation, organization, security,
maintenance and other activities used to effectively support record keeping for an
organization. ARMA’s development of these policies has included legal assistance to relate
principles to underlying ABA Model Rules and other authorities as they apply.
This session will introduce all eight principles with a focus on how each applies to law firms,
tips on how to assess your firm’s compliance, and steps you can take to apply these principles
to your law firm’s records policies.

HOLIDAY GIFT EXCHANGE
- The Rules –
If you wish to participate in the gift exchange at this year’s holiday luncheon, bring a wrapped gift. The gift should not exceed $20. You will receive a number when you place your gift on the gift table.
When the exchange begins, the person whose number is called will select a gift and unwrap it. The gift will be shown to everyone present. The next person will have the option of “stealing” the first person’s gift, or in the alternative, selecting a new gift, unwrapping it and showing it to everyone present. The third person then will have the option of stealing #1’s gift, stealing #2’s gift, or selecting a new gift, unwrapping it, and so forth.
If your gift is stolen, you have the choice of stealing someone else’s gift, or selecting a new gift to unwrap before the next person gets a turn. In the alternative, you can choose to steal a gift from someone else,
but you cannot steal the gift that was just stolen from you! You can, however, steal a gift that was stolen from you if it has been stolen by someone else in the interim.
Gifts can be “stolen” only two times before they are declared dead. Once dead, you own it! Got it? If not, do not despair, the rules will be re-explained before we actually start the gift exchange.

Meta-what? E-who?
ELECTRONIC DOCUMENTS, ELECTRONICALLY STORED INFORMATION (ESI), AND METADATA:
How a firm handles its own electronic documents differs from how it handles (or doesn't handle) ESI; both involve metadata. Metadata travels with every electronic file and can be created, edited, and altered by anyone. The speaker will show you some examples of metadata and how easily it can be altered. She will also discuss products that help to scrub metadata from files before they are sent out of the firm. In addition, she will discuss the specific ethical rules about accessing metadata from electronic files, how to handle preserving and protecting metadata internally, and some common tools used to access metadata.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
Everyone! We typically think of data as tangible, printed data. We have moved from that, and quickly! This program is recommended for all managers that oversee the Information Systems in your office, whether as a principal administrator, or IT manager.
SPEAKER BIO:
PAM PIERCE is a Senior Litigation Technology Coordinator for Troutman Sanders. She has handled several multi-million dollar cases and has extensive trial experience. Ms. Pierce started the Litigation Support Department at Ross, Dixon & Bell from the ground up, and served as the firm's Litigation Support Manager prior to its merger with Troutman Sanders in January 2009. Ms. Pierce has also served as an instructor at the University of San Diego. She has consulted with clients and attorneys on electronic document issues as they pertain to electronic discovery or ESI.
MCLE:
This program will qualify for 1.0 hours of MCLE credit.
LOCATION
The Regency Room @ The Westgate, located at 1055 Second Ave., San Diego, CA 92101.

Topic: Cost Savings and “Green” Initiatives

Host: Ray Moore (619) 595-3250

Description: The “green” theme has been discussed in many different ways in many different forums over the past several years. The movement, however, is more than simply ordering recycled paper and virtualizing your servers; it’s doing the little things day-in and day-out to reduce energy consumption and waste. In those little changes lie the potential for reducing your firm’s total overhead. With the slowdown in our economy, many firms are looking at ways to reduce costs and some have found a different kind of green in becoming more “green.”
Please join this roundtable/panel discussion to hear what practical changes other firms have implemented, what worked and what didn’t, and what financial impact the changes have had on their firms. Jennifer Severson (Luce Forward) and Lee Burdick (Higgs Fletcher & Mack) will share their experiences and all will be welcome and encouraged to participate in the discussion.
